Goal:

Students will learn how the international community tries to prevent the use and recruitment of child soldiers.
  • Guiding Questions:
    • Why are child soldiers used in war?
    • How are child soldiers recruited?
    • What actions does/can the international community take to stop the use and recruitment of child soldiers?

Content Objective:

Students will be able to explain why and how child soldiers are recruited into fighting.

Help students capture their understanding of the concept of child soldiers in a graphic organizer. Consider a concept map or a Frayer Model.

Suggested Agenda:

1. After the do now, provide a brief overview (ppt/guided notes) defining recruitment and how/why children are recruited.

2. Students practice with key ideas of by analyzing a news article about a recruitment in specific areas of the world, looking for regional specifics for
  • why child soldiers were recruited
  • what they do once recruited
  • what actions are being taken to end this (if none, listed, brainstorm ideas)

Possible countries to analyze (maybe create short readings based on these articles?)

3. Students make a concept map or Frayer Model for the recruitment of child soldiers.
